How to Prepare a CNC Machining RFQ

The drawings, material details and inspection information that help turn an enquiry into a useful manufacturing review.

Start with the current part definition

Send the latest 3D model together with a 2D drawing when available. The model describes the geometry, while the drawing can identify datums, tolerances, threads and finishing requirements. Use matching part numbers and revision labels so the reviewer can check that both files describe the same part.

Separate critical features from general dimensions

Explain which surfaces locate the part, which holes mate with another component and where a fit or sealing function is involved. Identify the dimensions that control those relationships. Clear functional information is more useful than applying the tightest possible tolerance to every surface.

Specify material and final condition

State the material grade and any required heat treatment or surface treatment. Identify cosmetic surfaces and areas that must remain free of coating. If a material substitution is acceptable, say what properties or approval process apply.

Include quantity and inspection needs

Provide the initial quantity, anticipated repeat volume and target schedule. Add requirements for material documentation, dimensional reports, marking and packaging. Where an inspection method or report format matters to acceptance, include it with the RFQ.
